This Week in Julie History: Coronation Night Gala Supper Dance and All-Star Cabaret, Cumberland Hotel, 2 June 1953

Seventy years ago, in June 1953, London pulsated with the exhilarating energy of Coronation Week. Just as witnessed during the recent ascension of King Charles, crowds thronged the flag-bedecked streets of the capital, hearts ablaze with patriotic pride, waiting for a glimpse of their new young Queen Elizabeth II.  Numerous celebrations filled the Coronation Week of 1953, ranging from quaint neighbourhood street parties to grand, opulent balls. Almost every hotel and restaurant across the city curated special coronation-themed events. Among these, the Cumberland Hotel, located in the upscale Marble Arch district, offered a notable highlight with a magnificent Gala Supper Dance and Dinner. 

Tickets for the gala were priced at 5 gns—approximately £200 in today's terms—so it was clearly a high-end affair. But for their money, guests were indulged with a gourmet six-course supper featuring suitably coronation-themed dishes such as Le blanc de poularde Reine Elizabeth -- Queen Elizabeth chicken breast -- served with Windsor Pearls and Royal Potatoes. Enhancing the experience, guests were also treated to a cocktail on arrival, half-bottle of vintage champagne and after-supper liqueurs.

A superbly curated All-Star Cabaret performance served as a delightful accompaniment to the evening's supper. Compered by celebrated magician, Billy McComb, it featured a line-up of top variety entertainers including comedian Reg Dixon; radio impressionist Peter Cavanagh, the singing duo, Jack and Daphne Barker, and ‘Britain’s youngest soprano’, Julie Andrews.

That Julie was contracted as one of the gala’s headliners attests to her rising professional stock in the era. Now aged 17, she was fast moving beyond the child star persona of her early career and events such as this cabaret marked a pivot to a more mature and sophisticated style.

Unfortunately, as she relates in the first volume of her memoirs, Julie didn’t actually make it to the Cumberland Hotel that night due to a car breakdown:

“There were many glamourous events and galas during the time of the coronation, and my mother and I were invited to perform one evening at a hotel on Park Lane. We set off in Bettina, our trusty car. There was a low bridge on the way to London, where the road took a huge dip. We were decked out in our best attire, and as happens so often in England, it was simply teeming with rain. Ahead of us, under the bridge, was a vast body of water. “Oh, just plow through it,” I advised Mum. “If we go fast enough, we ’ll come out the other side.” Mum gunned the engine, and Bettina came to a hissing stop right in the middle of the pool. Her motor had completely flooded. Dressed in our finery, we waded out of the deep water and stumbled to a garage to ask for the car to be towed to safety. We never did make the concert” (2008, 154).

There is no record of how Julie’s absence was conveyed to the crowd at the Cumberland or what their response was...but we’d have been crying into our five guinea half-bottle of vintage champagne!

Your talk about your eyes and not being covered kind of made me want to talk about something

I have Colorado medicaid. You know what we have covered? Dental (cause they realized it was cheaper to give dental than pay for complications) and eye exams (no glasses, but better than nothing)

People act like, and I wish I was joking, the idea with socialized medicine is to hold doctors at gunpoint (I figured we could just... pay them, but you do you rightwingers)

It's actually just really good insurance. I get into places as fast or faster than when I had actual insurance in the past (despite all the places that don't take medicaid, which might change if everyone had it). I've gotten way more care since I don't have copays. I pretty much never have had anything denied... it's like normal shitty insurance, but a bit better

Also here's a great bonus story, my mom's on disability. Had medicaid before she was able to get on disability even. Well she gets old enough to qualify for medicare. She's forced to pay like $125 a month for the privilege of worse insurance

By that I mean medicaid covered her thyroid medication. She gets medicare, they don't want to cover that med despite it being an old one and one she doesn't have a bad reaction to. Well medicaid won't cover it now cause she has other insurance. She literally pays a fee to be forced to pay out of pocket for a med that was previously covered (and as far as I know basically can't drop it now that she has it without messing things up with medicaid)

So... yeah. Just... just every time I mention like going to the dentist and having people say lucky, and me realizing oh shit I am lucky, and my luck being that I was broke enough to qualify... what the fuck?

Really really wish everyone just had at least as good as Colorado medicaid, even fucking bezos so we're not worrying about enforcement nonsense

Really wish we had universal healthcare cause... basically I just have kickass insurance, and it sucks hearing that you, someone working, are less well covered than I am

(And private insurance could still exist, it just might be forced to... you know... actually provide a benefit at a reasonable price to give people a reason to not just go with their medicaid)

Honestly the way we handle health care in this country is a goddamn nightmare, and we literally already know and have known for years that it kills people.

I will say that often even good medicaids are uhhhhhhhh not so good on the provider side. They "cover" a lot of claims that don't actually get paid, ya know? I work in healthcare, and have generally been a big fan of the medicaid in my catchment area because it actually seems to be pretty comperable to how you describe CO's. That said, as a provider, I would say a solid half of any "non-urgent" claims get denied, and at least one of the medicaid providers has denied every single claim the practice has submitted to them even though they keep telling us we're in network with them and following their instructions.

So. I do sort of get why it can seem (depending on which side of the insurance you're on) like holding providers at gunpoint. On the patient end you've got people receiving reasonably quality/comprehensive care with no fee at the point of service, which is phenomenal! On the provider side though, it often looks like losing literally thousands of dollars a month on denied claims for necessary services with little to no recourse.

We do it anyway of course, because the practice I work for is strongly oriented towards "serve the clients best needs even if it causes operating at a loss" but admittedly not every practice can survive under a premise like that for long. I think one of my biggest frustrations is that they always reject crisis care billable hours, even though they claim to cover them, and even when I am literally talking someone through a total breakdown in functionality. It's very frustrating to know that one of the most basic elements of mental health care (emergency support in crisis) will never be paid for (keep in mind that often when insurancr denies a claim, a practice won't pay a provider for that time) which neither the practice nor I can really afford.

Basically, we desperately need universal quality healthcare coverage, as well as (frankly) incentives for providers to actually register with the providers of this insurance rather than providing OOP care only. And that universal coverage needs to understand that "protecting patients from overcharging" is not mutually exclusive from "paying claims for emergency/out of norm care".

This doll I bought out of curiosity. She is Emily Fashion Classics. She was in a pretty package and cheap. Her quality is comperable to the price though.

I like her face. The strawberry blond curvy MtM barbie I didn't like because she looked like she is crying and this doll I like because she looks like she is crying. She even has pink paint on the inside edge of her eyes. I think the difference boils down to the shape of the mouth for me.

She has a very light weight and hollow body and I don't like her waist joint. This doll has very soft hair but there is not much of it and the hair already started falling out the moment I touched it.

xmas 2022 pt 2

on the day after xmas, i called carnival cruise who told me that we are unable to embark on the cruise from cozumel and proceeded to cancel our ticket because there was no way we could make it to nola in time. we were refunded only the taxes & fees, as well as the price for our chichen itza excursion. currently we have to pay our cruise ticket price (~$1800 for two) as a penalty fee. NY state has a regulation where we are unable to utilize carnival’s refund if we did not buy travel insurance from the cruise company. i’m hoping that amex can come to the rescue with trip cancellation insurance. as the department is out of office today, i should have an answer tomorrow. 

we cancelled our very expensive business class ticket to cancun right after we were told that embarkment was impossible. out of desperation and emotions, matt was willing to pay $3k for the tickets if that meant he could cruise with his family. 

after a 4 hour hold on the phone with delta the day after xmas, they issued me a $250 voucher for the inconvenience of missing the cruise. we are hoping for more compensation but it is pending processing from the refunds department and may take up to 30 days for a response. i followed up with delta today via chat (which took a considerably shorter time for a response ~15 minutes) and they again offered apologies and a $150 voucher/person. so far, i am up $550 for the two of us for this flight cancellation and hope i can get more so that all our expenses will be covered lol. 

xmas and the days after xmas turned into scrambling and troubleshooting for the trip. it wasn’t the easiest to communicate because matt was on a different schedule than us. i had to be the bearer of bad news to his family and to him when he woke up that day after night shifts (after only 4 hours of sleep). running on fumes, post-night shifts/80 hour work week recovery and the disappointment of missing a family cruise made this experience very emotional. we booked last minute flights to new orleans to arrive thursday morning and booked a last minute hotel room in the french quarter. also did our best to book restaurants and activities. 

matt always sets out to bite off more than he can chew. its admirable that he always does so much though it comes with extra benefits and extra tolls/stress. the moment that our flight to nola got cancelled, i would have given up, stayed put in nyc, and went straight to amex to try and get our money back. matt (regardless of the fact that he’s working a 12 hr shift until 7am the night before) immediately goes to check for other flights that we can possibly take, from philly, or other routes, to get on the damn cruise. 

f*ck marwa (his boss) for putting him on night shifts yet again. although his contract says 20% of nights, we calculated his nights to be 45% thus far. he finally complained when she put him on nights on the second half of january again. a trip right after night shifts is definitely not enjoyable because you’re basically recovering and reversing the “jet lag” the first few days. anyway, if he was on days, we saw that the flight that we would have taken on xmas night made it to nola soundly. 

nola 2022: the last time i was in nola was right before the pandemic in january 2020. i guess this trip makes it full circle. this time around, i experienced the richer side of nola. we had a rental car last time; this time we ubered or took tours. due to our sleep schedules being off, we only got one hour of sleep before our flight thursday morning. the hotel fortunately allowed us complimentary early check in. we took an uber to eat at blue oaks bbq near city park and trudged over to cafe du monde afterwards. came back to the hotel to nap. that night, we ate at compere lapin. 

on the second day, our steamboat on the mississippi river got delayed and then cancelled. it was pouring rain and they said the boat had mechanical issues. i think the world was telling us that we’re not allowed on any boats that week. we went to eat herbsaint, checked out the sazerac house, and then rode a streetcar to the garden district to eat la petite grocery. all of these restaurants that we were eating were mostly white, “fine dining” establishments. la petite grocery especially was entirely white. it felt interesting to be the only POC. my favorite dish of this trip was the hamachi with pineapple and fried okra from compere lapin.

on the third day (NYE), we met up with matt’s family for a swamp and plantation tour. i did these activities in 2020 but at different locations so it was interesting to compare/contrast. the weather was warmer this time around, so we saw more alligators. i was lucky to see one up close. the plantation’s oak trees are beautiful. the one we went to this time was more commercialized and the experience was more like a museum. after the tour, we checked in to the sonder that i booked for everyone - it was a two bedroom apartment and extremely spacious. i led matt’s dad, brother and cousin in and it was really nice to see their reaction to the space. matt and his mom came in later and she liked it too. matt and i have become the default planners/navigators of trips. he did the majority of the work when it came to booking everyone’s plane tickets, cruise tickets, excursions, hotels, activities, restaurants etc. not only does he book these, but everything has to be up to his standards as good quality and good deal. 

sidebar: we have met his match when it comes to these credit card points/travel hacking, his indian coworker R. R was helping us through this scramble during xmas night shift (tips on converting points to stay at a 5 star resort for cheap, how to email a complaint letter to delta using an AI generator, etc)

NYE evening, we ate at trenasse, which FINALLY was a mixed crowd. we ate the flavors of lousiana (crawfish pie, shrimp and grits, gumbo, oysters, etc) and shared a bottle of wine. the timing worked out perfectly for us to walk over to jackson square to watch the ball drop at midnight. our sonder also provided NYE props for us to wear and matts cousin had some raver necklaces. i think this was my first time ever celebrating new years by actually being out and counting down? the crowd was not at all rowdy and overall it was pretty quiet - i was scared it was going to be very crazy like bourbon st which i can only handle in doses. the fireworks were mesmerizing and the whole experience was really nice. 

all of our uber drivers were friendly and talkative, which is completely different from NYC and most other cities. there were three uber drivers that we had who were talking on the phone on speaker. one was specifically chatting to his baby mama or girlfriend about nye plans and his lost debit card lol. i’ve never seen an uber driver have a full on conversation with passengers in their car. i was a bit apprehensive about all the talking (like i see how covid can spread more easily with this southern hospitality culture) but i started liking it by the end of the trip. 

it usually comes down to: we got to experience really cool and memorable things, but is it worth the extra stress/lack of relaxation and rest? especially when the lack of relaxation and rest impacts the quality of being able to experience said really cool things? is it worth it if the extra stress causes us to be in worse moods and argue more? seeing family also comes with extra responsibilities as we are the adult couple who has more travel experiences and therefore should make the call on a lot of things. 

this month, i am making it a point to only stay in town. we need to learn how to cultivate our lives here, which can be difficult without family and many friends. 

although we have more money now, we are not using it to make our lives less stressful. in fact we are complicating our lives and adding more pressure. with the bougier choices that we are making (to try and make ourselves happier), ie the expensive trips and expensive dinners, there are definitely higher expectations, higher financial pressures and stress, more planning involved (and more opportunities for mishaps to occur), and then then more pressure to work more to fund this lifestyle that you’re too burnt out to enjoy. soooo stupid.

To add on to what Green bean is saying about fanfiction:

Yes, the vast majority of fanfiction is bad especially when compering it to a published novel. However that is just because the vast majority of people are simply not good writers.

There are so many books that have never been picked up by a publisher and that will never see the light of day because they are not very good. The nature of fanfiction means that everyone of every age and every skill level can write and post a fanfiction. There is no screening process for fanfiction, there will be a few very good or even great prices of fanfiction written, but the vast majority will always be bad to mediocre. Not because fanfiction its self is bad or because fanfiction writers are especially bad but just because most people are not good writers.

Also it's not fair or reasonable to have the same standard or a price of writing some did for fun Vs a prices of writing done by a professional author who has an editor and years of experience.

And remember your favourite author probably hade to write a bunch of baldy written stories before they wrote their good ones. For a lot of people fanfiction is a way of practicing writing since you are playing with preexisting characters, meaning it's a lot less intimidating to start with.

I feel like when people call reboots "basically fanfiction" they think they've come up with some big brained insult that immediately makes everyone recoil in shame for ever daring to like a reboot but it's really not.

If anything I think it can be taken more as a compliment than an insult. I also think it's based in some fact.

Unless the original creator(s) of the original thing are involved in the reboot's creation, then yes, it can technically fall under the distinction of "fanfiction" and honestly, that's good. A lot of people want to discount fanfiction as ridiculous or childish, but it's really an interesting exploration of media, how we interpret stories, and personal fulfilment. If a team of people create a reboot or new iteration of something, then yes they probably are fans, I would hope so at least since that means genuine passion and care is going into re-imagening the original work.

Discounting a different iteration or reboot just because it isn't one for one like the original is just straight up bad and trying to mock something by calling it "fanfiction" as if that's some sort of insult just shows that the person using that term doesn't have any really experience with fanfiction or fandom spaces.

Yes, there are bad reboots which only exist as cash grabs but those can't fall under the classification of fanfiction because at its core fanfiction doesn't exist for monetary gain but for the writers & readers simple enjoyment & expression of their care for the source material. Being able to sit down and write a 5k or more story is hard without passion and motivation and care.

The very concept of fanfiction is in itself a love letter to the source material, that someone saw what another person created and became so inspired that they made up their own story or scenario with those characters or story, then had the patience and drive to write it all down. So, trying to use "It's basically fanfiction" as an insult is actually missing the point of the relationship between fanfiction and its original source.

Especially since there are many cases where fanfiction can be better than the source material. Fanfiction isn't just about putting characters in a ridiculous situation or shipping. It can be about exploring storylines the og abandoned or didn't have time for in its constraints. It can be about expanding on things which we're only teased or given little time in the og. It can be about pushing storylines & characters to their full potential that the og may not have been able to deliver on.

TLDR: calling a reboot "fanfiction" isn't an insult, and acting like it is an insult means you're misunderstanding the fundamental relationship between fanfiction and its source material.

I have had further contact with the show booker! I also spoke to my Swedish former English teacher who said she showed her friend who uses the aforementioned show booker and he adores my work. It doesn't guarantee anything but it's positive.

I admit three days ago I felt pretty desolate. Even feeling like the knocks were a sign I should completely change course. Even though I think my work is beautiful and I'm proud of I admit to feeling discouraged. But what a major sale can do. I genuinely believe I'm coming to the end of the part of life where I'm struggling. I live in a city that the average home price is close to $1 mil, if I'm able to get local whole foods moms I will be able to rebuild. I will be able to help people the way people have helped me. I feel so close to that future. I'm not quite there and will no doubt have to plea for framing costs. But I feel like I'm almost there to being economically self sufficient and I'm so incredibly grateful to have this community, that I've never had anything comperable in grass world, that has supported me and stuck through my lean times and my erratic trauma motivated moods. I feel like from staff to follower I've be helped along. I know lots of animators, illustrators and cartoonists have had success outside tumblr but I think I could be the first tumblr (ie i post most on tumblr and it's the only place im known) fine artist to go mainstream. It would be a tickle to visit moma and know you have a piece of my art and my success. And I thank you for helping stay on my path.

Be sure you follow up by contacting their references to check out all of their experience. Provide finalists a few detailed inquiries to determine their experience and knowledge. Seek out air conditioning repair contractors who may have the feeling and data to take care of an entire house system. The greater experience, the higher.

4. Get yourself a bid. After narrowing the list down even further to a couple of candidates, ask each to get a bid which includes all necessary equipment, energy-efficiency rating and then for any hidden extras. Be sure to ask about warranties and exactly how they handle change orders. Remember, this is not always about choosing the lowest price. In many cases, the lowest-priced bids are missing several components that is to be added last down the road. Instead, search for essentially the most complete bids and compere those details to the cheapest bids. Compare apples to apples for top level idea of costs.

5. Result in the choice. After reviewing the proposals and selecting the brand new air conditioning repair contractor, ensure that you sign a written proposal before the work gets started that spells out specific costs, payment method and schedule, if the work is going to be completed, etc.

Pricing It Right

One of the hardest parts of your job as a real estate agent is the ability to price a seller's home correctly. There are so many variables that go along with accurate pricing and if agents do not consider all of these, they may be costing their sellers thousands of dollars in lost potential sales revenue. More often however, because of the inability to price correctly agents walk away empty-handed without ever having the opportunity to sell the home because the price the agent came up with is not consistent with the seller's expectations. Agents can spend hours doing CMAs only to find that what they are presenting to the potential seller(s) either wasn't enough information, the right kind of information, or the information the seller wanted or expected to hear.

The key to pricing it right is a combination of laser-focused accuracy and gut-wrenching honesty. This means that you are required to not only do your homework but also be able to present it flawlessly. Sellers often want to play the "name their price" game with you, but if you engage in the game you will lose on all counts because you will either walk away with a seriously overpriced listing, or you will walk away empty handed because the seller won't respect you.

If you can look at pricing as an essential part of what you do and an ethical part of what you do, it becomes a lot easier to tell sellers like it is. If your number one goal when you meet with a new seller is to tell them the market value based on all of your research - because it is professional negligence to do anything else - it makes presenting the facts about the price much easier for you.

Too many agents walk out of the listing presentation empty-handed or with listings that won't sell because they are overpriced and doomed from that first ill-fated meeting. Overpriced homes don't sell - period. The moment you embrace this idea is the moment you will be of greater service to your sellers and a better steward of your time and money.

Sellers want, need, and deserve to hear the truth, even if it is not the fantasy price they had in mind. The challenge is, of course, how you help a seller recover from the shock they may have when you deliver "the truth"? Always remember that taking an overpriced listing that won't sell will produce long-term pain for both you and the seller. The short-term pain you may experience when you deliver the truth to the seller is much more preferable. But agents must learn deliver this news in a responsible and caring way.

Today I want you to really think about all of the listings that you have taken in your career where you knew in your gut that they were overpriced and would not sell. Did you take the listing anyway hoping and praying for a miracle, or for time to pass so the seller would eventually weaken on their pricing position? How many listings did you spend countless hours and hard-earned money in marketing without a positive result? Overpriced listings aren't good for you, the sellers, your career, or your future business.

Make a commitment to run a business where the main focus is to provide 100% truthful pricing information, all the time. It shouldn't matter what the seller wants or needs.

Could you imagine calling a stockbroker and saying, "I know I paid $200 for X Company stock and it is trading for $150 today. But I really need $200. Can we just put it out there at $200 and see what happens?"

Of course not. That's not how the stock market works - and it's not how the real estate market should work either.

Overpriced listings do not sell and they erode your ability to price correctly. Pricing correctly not only includes research skills, but fine-tuned communication skills, and the ability to back up your price with research, facts, and explanation.

So, the next time you walk into a seller's home for a listing presentation ask yourself if the price you present, and ultimately list, the home at is the price you intended to present. Don't allow an overly-optimistic seller to sway you from what you know in your gut is the truth of pricing.
